How do period delay pills work?

Period delay pills contain norethisterone, a synthetic form of the hormone progesterone. We also provide Medroxyprogesterone (formerly Provera). During a normal menstrual cycle, progesterone levels rise after ovulation to prepare the womb lining for pregnancy. If pregnancy does not occur, progesterone levels drop, triggering the womb lining to shed,  which is your period. Norethisterone works by maintaining progesterone levels artificially, preventing that hormonal drop and keeping the womb lining in place. As long as you continue taking the tablets, your period is delayed. Once you stop taking them, progesterone levels fall, and your period will usually begin within two to three days. Norethisterone is taken as a 5mg tablet, three times a day, and can delay your period for up to 17 days.

Are period delay pills safe to use?

Yes. Norethisterone has been used for many years and is considered safe for short-term, occasional use in most healthy women. However, it is not suitable for everyone. Women with a history of blood clots, liver disease, heart problems, breast cancer, unexplained vaginal bleeding, or those who are pregnant or breastfeeding should not take norethisterone. It is also important to note that norethisterone is not a contraceptive and does not protect against pregnancy. A clinician will review your medical history during your consultation to ensure the treatment is suitable and safe for you before issuing a prescription.

When should I take a period delay pill?

Norethisterone must be started at least three days before your expected period to be effective. If you begin taking it too late,  particularly once your progesterone levels have already started to fall,  the medication may not prevent bleeding. The standard dose is one 5mg tablet taken three times a day, ideally at evenly spaced intervals throughout the day. You should continue taking the tablets for as long as you wish to delay your period, up to a maximum of 17 days. Your prescriber will provide personalised instructions based on your cycle and your travel or event dates.

Can period delay pills affect my future menstrual cycle?

No. Norethisterone is designed for short-term, occasional use and does not have a lasting impact on your regular menstrual cycle. Once you stop taking the tablets, your period will typically arrive within two to three days. Your subsequent cycles should return to their normal pattern. Some women may notice that their first period after stopping is slightly heavier or lighter than usual, but this is temporary. If you find that you need to delay your period regularly, it is worth speaking with your GP about hormonal contraception, which may offer more consistent cycle control.

What is norethisterone?

Norethisterone is a synthetic progestogen (a man-made version of the hormone progesterone) that is licensed in the UK to delay periods. It is the only medication specifically licensed for this purpose. Norethisterone 5mg tablets are a prescription-only medicine, which means they must be prescribed by a qualified healthcare professional following a clinical assessment. Through Peak Pharmacy's online doctor service, you can complete a short consultation and, if approved, have your norethisterone tablets dispensed and delivered discreetly to your door.

Can I buy period delay pills online?

Yes. Peak Pharmacy offers a regulated online service for period delay treatment. You complete a short consultation that covers your medical history, current medications and the reason for delaying your period. A qualified clinician reviews your answers to ensure norethisterone is safe and appropriate for you. If approved, your prescription is dispensed by our pharmacy team and delivered in discreet packaging. Because norethisterone is a prescription-only medicine in the UK, it cannot be bought over the counter without a clinical assessment.

How long can I delay my period for?

Using norethisterone, you can delay your period for up to 17 days if you take the full course of tablets. The tablets are taken three times a day, starting at least three days before your period is due, and continuing for as long as you need the delay,  up to a maximum of 20 days of treatment (which provides 17 days of delay once the initial three days are accounted for). If you need a shorter delay, you simply take the tablets for fewer days. Norethisterone should only be used occasionally and is not recommended more than once every three months.

Are there side effects of period delay pills?

Norethisterone is generally well tolerated, but like all medications, it can cause side effects in some women. The most commonly reported include bloating, fluid retention, breast tenderness, headaches, nausea, changes in mood and changes in libido. Some women also experience spotting or breakthrough bleeding, particularly if the tablets were started too close to the expected period date. Fluid retention is worth noting for women with conditions that may be worsened by water retention. Side effects are usually mild and resolve once the tablets are stopped. If you experience any unusual or severe symptoms, stop taking the tablets and contact a healthcare professional.

Can I take period delay pills if I am on the contraceptive pill?

If you are already taking a combined oral contraceptive pill, you do not need norethisterone to delay your period. Instead, you can simply take your active pills back-to-back without the usual seven-day break (or skip the placebo pills). This is a well-established method of delaying a withdrawal bleed and is considered safe for occasional use. The approach varies slightly depending on which pill you take, so check with your pharmacist or GP if you are unsure. Norethisterone is intended for women who are not currently using hormonal contraception. If you are taking the progestogen-only pill (mini pill), speak with a healthcare professional for advice on the best approach.

Is norethisterone a contraceptive?

No. Although norethisterone contains a synthetic progestogen similar to hormones found in some contraceptive pills, it is not a form of birth control when used at the 5mg dose for period delay. It does not prevent ovulation reliably and should not be relied upon to prevent pregnancy. If you are sexually active and need contraception during the time you are taking norethisterone, you should use a separate method of contraception, such as condoms. If you are looking for a long-term solution that also controls your periods, speak with your GP about hormonal contraception options.

Who should not take period delay pills?

Norethisterone is not suitable for everyone. You should not take it if you are pregnant or suspect you may be pregnant, are breastfeeding, have a history of blood clots (deep vein thrombosis or pulmonary embolism), have severe liver disease or liver tumours, have a history of breast cancer or other hormone-sensitive cancers, have unexplained vaginal bleeding, or have a history of stroke or heart disease. Women with conditions that may be worsened by fluid retention, such as epilepsy, migraines, asthma, or heart or kidney problems, should also discuss suitability carefully with a prescriber. Peak Pharmacy's consultation process is designed to identify any contraindications before a prescription is issued.

Can I use period delay pills for a holiday or wedding?

Yes,  this is one of the most common reasons women request period delay treatment. Whether you have a beach holiday, wedding, sporting event, religious observance or any other occasion where you would prefer not to have your period, norethisterone can provide a simple and effective solution. The key is to plan and start your consultation early enough to receive your tablets before you need to begin taking them. Since norethisterone must be started at least three days before your expected period, it is advisable to order your prescription at least one to two weeks in advance.

Will my period be heavier after taking period delay pills?

Some women find that their first period after stopping norethisterone is slightly heavier or lasts a day or two longer than usual. This is because the womb lining has been maintained for longer than it normally would be, so there may be a little more to shed. This is temporary and not harmful. Your subsequent periods should return to their normal pattern. If you experience unusually heavy or prolonged bleeding after stopping the tablets, or if your period does not return within a week of stopping, contact your GP or pharmacist for advice.
