Product description
Malarone is licensed for preventing malaria in patients traveling to areas of the world where malaria is present. Malarone contains the active ingredients Atovaquone/Proguanil hydrochloride.
Malarone is probably the most effective antimalarial tablet and is generally suitable for sub-Saharan Africa, South America and Southeast Asia.
It is important to know that no antimalarial tablet is 100% effective so insect repellents should be used to avoid bites from mosquitoes and other biting insects.
Directions
Malarone tablets for adults and children weighting greater than 40kg should be taken with or after food or a milky drink as follows:
How often should tablets be taken? | 1 tablet each day when in the risk area. |
When should I start treatment? | 2 days before entering the risk area. |
How often when leaving risk area? | 7 days after leaving the risk area. |
What if I miss a dose?
If you forget to take a dose, don’t worry. Just take your next dose as soon as you remember. Then continue your treatment as before. Don’t take extra tablets to make up for a missed dose. Just take your next dose at the usual time and always ensure you use insect repellents.
Please note: If you develop flu-like symptoms whilst away or within 1 year of return please see a doctor immediately and explain your travel history. Many tropical illnesses like malaria often present as a cold or flu-like illness.

Other medicines and Malarone
Tell us if you are taking, have recently taken, or might take any other medicines, including medicines you’ve bought without a prescription. Some medicines can affect the way Malarone works, or Malarone itself can strengthen or weaken the effectiveness of other medicines taken at the same time. These include:
- Metoclopramide used to treat nausea and vomiting
- The antibiotics, tetracycline, rifampicin and rifabutin
- Efavirenz or certain highly active protease inhibitors used to treat HIV
- Warfarin and other medicines that stop blood clotting
- Etoposide, used to treat cancer.

Frequently Asked Questions
How many should I order for my trip?
First of all, check if this product is suitable for your destination. We recommend Travel Health Pro a verified and reliable NHS Travel Resource.
Malarone should be taken daily, starting 1-2 days before travel, whilst at risk, and then for 7 days upon leaving. A short holiday of 14 days would need 23 tablets.
No need to worry about figuring out how many Malarone tablets you need. Our consultation will do that for you when you order them online with us. Clever. You can even add additional family members to your order, saving you time and money on postage.
What if I am sick after taking Malarone?
If you are sick (vomit) within 1 hour of taking your Malarone tablet, take another dose straight away.
It is important to take the full course of Malarone and always read the patient leaflet.
If you have to take extra tablets due to sickness, you may need another prescription. Please contact us and we may be able to help.
If you have been vomiting, it is especially important to use extra protection, such as strong insect repellents and bednets. Malarone may not be as effective, as the amount absorbed will be reduced.
