How Does Chloramphenicol Work?
Chloramphenicol belongs to a group of medicines called antibiotics. Antibiotics are used for infections caused by bacteria.
In terms of acute bacterial conjunctivitis or ‘red eye’, Chloramphenicol eye ointment helps to treat infection by stopping the bacteria’s growth, allowing time for your body’s immune system to help eliminate the remaining bacteria.
What’s In It?
Each 4g tube contains Chloramphenicol 1.0% w/w. Liquid Paraffin and White Soft Paraffin.
Symptoms of Conjunctivitis:
Conjunctivitis is also known as red or pink eye.
It usually affects both eyes and makes them:
- Bloodshot.
- Burn or feel gritty.
- Produce pus that sticks to lashes.
- Itchy.
- Watery.
How To Use Chloramphenicol Ointment:
A course of treatment lasts 5 days and this ointment should only be used by adults and children over 2 years of age.
1 - Wash your hands before using the ointment
2 - Sit or stand in front of a mirror
3 - Take off the tube cap
4 - Tilt your head gently backwards
5 - Gently pull the lower eyelid down
6 - Gently squeeze the tube, and put about 1cm of ointment into the space between the lower eyelid and the eye.
7 - Let go of the eyelid and blink a few times. This will help spread the ointment over the eye.
8 - Try not to touch the eye, eyelashes or anything else with the tib of the tube.
9 - Repeat for the other eye, if affected.
10 - Replace the cap securely after use.
It is important to complete the course of treatment even if your eye or eyes feel better.
Additional Advice:
Do not repeat the course of treatment without first consulting your doctor or pharmacist.
If you miss a dose, use the ointment as directed above and then continue your normal course of treatment.
Store in a cool place and use within 28 days of opening. Do not use this medicine after the 28 days have elapsed.
Keep out of sight and reach of children.
