What is Canesten Cream?
Canesten cream provides fast, soothing relief from irritation caused by fungal infections of the skin. Typical uses include treating:
- Ringworm
- Athlete’s foot
- Fungal nappy rash
- Fungal sweat rash
- Irritation of the vulva (external thrush) or the end of the penis, which may be associated with thrush
Typical symptoms of yeast infections caused by yeasts like Candida albicans include itching, irritation and redness.
Fungal infections spread easily. It is for this reason that Travelpharm would recommend that you don't share towels and other hygiene products.
Can I buy Canesten Cream over the counter?
This medicine is available to buy over the counter. You do not need a prescription to buy Canesten but you might be asked some questions about your medical health when you add it to your basket. Our pharmacist will check your consultation prior to despatch to ensure it is safe and appropriate for you.
How to use Canesten Cream
Before use, pierce the tube seal by inverting the cap over the end of the tube, press down. If the feet are infected, they should be washed and dried thoroughly, especially between the toes, before applying the cream. Apply Canesten Cream thinly and evenly to the affected areas two or three times daily and rub in gently. A strip of cream (1/2 cm long) is enough to treat an area of about the size of the hand. Treatment should continue during and after the infection has cleared, to ensure it does not return. This is usually 2 weeks for candida infections like vaginal thrush and four weeks for other infections like ringworm, jock itch, athletes foot etc because fungal spores can be very persistent on the skin.
Top Tips: Although the infected area will itch, try not to scratch. Scratching will damage the surface of the skin and cause the infection to spread further. Keep the affected skin areas clean. Pay particular attention to drying the skin, but avoid excessive rubbing. Do not share towels, bath mats, etc. with other people as you could spread the infection to them. Always wash your hands after treating the infection to prevent it from spreading.
If you have athlete’s foot: Remember to dry the skin between the toes thoroughly. Wash your socks, stockings and tights thoroughly in hot water to remove any shed skin or fungal spores. Change your footwear daily if possible.
Canesten Cream Contains: Clotrimazole 1%w/w.

What side effects could I expect
Canesten Cream is generally well tolerated but the following side effects tend to be the most common:
- Itching, rash, blisters, burning, discomfort, swelling, irritation, redness or peeling of skin.

Who should not use Canesten Cream
This medicine should not be used by the following groups of patients without first seeking medical advice from your GP or our Pharmacist:
- If you (or your baby if treating nappy rash) are allergic (hypersensitive) to clotrimazole or any of the other ingredients, including cetostearyl alcohol, of Canesten Cream.
- To treat nail or scalp infections.
