What is Allergic Rhinitis?

Allergic rhinitis is inflammation of the lining of the nose provoked by an allergen such as pollen, dust, mould or the skin flakes of certain animals.

In susceptible individuals, when the cells lining the nose are exposed to a certain allergen, histamine is released causing swelling, irritation and inflammation. This causes symptoms such as sneezing, itchiness and blocked or runny nose. This is where Avamys can help.

Allergens can vary between individuals but common triggers include pollen, dust, mould or animal skin flakes. The symptoms usually start fairly soon after being exposed to the allergen.

Some people experience symptoms all year round and others may be sensitive to seasonal allergens such as pollen and only experience symptoms for a few weeks at a time.

What is Avamys Nasal Spray and how does it work?

Fluticasone Furoate, the active ingredient in Avamys nasal spray, is a corticosteroid that has potent anti-inflammatory action. It binds to the cells in the nasal passage and over time it reduces the inflammatory symptoms associated with allergic rhinitis.

Most patients who use Avamys start to notice benefits within 8-24hrs of starting treatment, but due to the nature of inflammation, it could take between 7-14 days of continuous use to see the full anti-inflammatory effects. Whilst this steroid nasal spray may not provide immediate allergy relief, using this spray regularly stop/reduce allergic rhinitis before it even starts!.

One bottle of Avamys contains 120 sprays and can last for up to 2 months once your symptoms are controlled.

Who can use Avamys

Avamys nasal spray is intended for use by adults 18 years and above suffering rhinitis caused by an allergen, eg Hay Fever where conventional over the counter nasal sprays like Beconase and Pirinase have been ineffective.

How to use Avamys?

You should always take this medicine at the dosage recommended by your doctor or pharmacist.

The usual starting dose for adults aged 18 years and over is two spray actuation in each nostril once daily. Once symptoms are controlled, one spray actuation in each nostril may be effective for maintenance.

When using for the first time the spray needs to be primed. To do this remove the protective cap, and whilst the bottle is upright squeeze the button firmly at least 6 times until a fine mist of the spray is released into the air.

This product is intended for intranasal use only.

Some important information to help you use this product:

  • Avamys comes in an amber glass bottle. If you need to check how much is left hold the nasal spray upright against a bright light. You will then be able to see the level through the window.
  • When you first use the nasal spray you will need to shake it vigorously with the cap on for about 10 seconds. This is important as Avamys is a thick suspension that becomes liquid when you shake it well. It will only spray when it becomes liquid.
  • The mist-release button must be pressed firmly in, to release the mist through the nozzle
  • If you have difficulty pressing the button with your thumb, you can use two hands
  • Always keep the cap on the nasal spray when you are not using it. The cap keeps the dust out, seals in the pressure and stops the nozzle from blocking up. When the cap is in place the mist release button cannot be pressed accidentally
  • Never use a pin or anything sharp to clear the nozzle. It will damage the nasal spray
