What does this medicine do?
Atovaquone/Proguanil, more commonly known as generic Malarone is an anti-malaria drug that will help prevent malaria infection in patients who are travelling to areas of the world where malaria is a problem.
Typically this includes South America, parts of Asia and sub-Saharan Africa.
This medicine is one of the most effective antimalarials available, but no anti-malaria medicine is 100% effective, and so you should avoid insect bites by using an appropriate insect repellent.
How many should I order for my trip?
First of all, check if this product is suitable for where you are travelling. We recommend Travel Health Pro an NHS Travel Resource.
Generic Malarone should be taken daily, starting 1-2 days before travel, whilst at risk and then for 7 days upon leaving. A short holiday of 14 days would need 23 tablets.
However, you don't need to worry about working out your quantities because when you order your Malarone tablets online with us our consultation will work out how many you need. Clever.
How do I take generic Malarone?
Generic Malarone tablets should be taken with or after food as follows:
How often should tablets be taken? | 1 tablet daily when in the risk area. |
When should I start treatment? | 2 days before entering the risk area. |
How often when leaving risk area? | 7 days when leaving the risk area. |
Please note: If you develop flu like symptoms whilst away or within 1 year of return please see a doctor immediately and explain where you have been.

My doctor has already written me a prescription for Malarone
If you want to send the prescription to us in the post then please increase the quantity box to the amount shown on your prescription and click "I Have a Prescription". You will need to post the original prescription to us before we can ship your order. To speed things up you could use our online consultation option.
Please note that doctors often write prescriptions for the brand Malarone. Whilst Malarone and Atovaquone/Proguanil contain the same active ingredients, Malarone is a brand. Unfortunately, UK law prevents a pharmacy from substituting an unbranded product where a brand has been specified by the prescriber. So if your prescriptions state Malarone you will need to buy Malarone, get the prescription changed or simply fill out our online consultation and let our specialist write your prescription.
