What causes the common cold?

The common cold is caused by a virus (rhinoviruses) that affects your upper respiratory tract. Symptoms usually start within 2 to 3 days of being exposed to the virus and tend to resolve within 7 to 10 days. The virus usually enters the body through the mouth or nasal passages and can be easily transmitted to others through touch or respiratory droplets from sneezing or coughing. Antibiotics cannot be used to treat a cold as it is caused by a virus and not bacteria.
